On Thursday 22nd a region-wide public speaking competition and youth forum was held in Tamworth as part of the Parliament of NSW's "Regional Roadshows".
Narrabri High School student Caitlin proudly spoke on the topic "My Hope for NSW" for 6 minutes, explaining how the HSC is impacting NSW and providing 3 detailed alternatives for everyone to consider. Fourteen students from across the region competed in the public speaking section, with the president of the legislative council, Hon. Ben Franklin, adjudicating. Afterwards Ben Franklin stated that it was the most competitive section he has seen so far.
After a short break Caitlin was joined by her fellow Narrabri High School students, Lily and captain Kendal, for the youth forum. During the forum students were encouraged to bring up topics of concern and debate possible solutions. There were five members of the legislative council in attendance, Hon. Ben Franklin, Hon. Anthony D'Adam, Hon. Stephen Lawerence, Hon. Aileen MacDonald and Hon. Sue Higginson.
Some of the topics discussed included nursing shortages, youth crime, access to opportunities in regional areas, Wee Waa hospital and the representation of regional groups such as farmers in political decisions.
All in all, it was a great opportunity for Narrabri High School students to test their public speaking skills, get a look into the political world and discuss issues that they see in their community.
