From March 26 – 29, Narrabri High School’s Senior Visual Arts students embarked on an unforgettable four-day creative adventure in Sydney, immersing themselves in the pulse of Australia’s contemporary art and design scene.
The excursion offered a rich and diverse itinerary designed to inspire, educate, and broaden artistic horizons. A key highlight was attending the 2024 HSC Visual Arts showcase, ARTEXPRESS, at the Art Gallery of NSW, where students engaged with outstanding student works and received valuable insights during an informative HSC art talk from three of last year's students.
Also featured at the gallery was a striking exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Cao Fei, whose innovative digital and multimedia works captivated the students and sparked thoughtful discussions about art in the modern world.
The group delved deeper into modern and contemporary art at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), before heading to the White Rabbit Gallery to explore provocative and cutting-edge Chinese contemporary art. Both experiences challenged students to reflect on cultural context and experimental techniques in their own artistic practice.
At Billy Blue College of Design @ Torrens University, students gained a practical perspective on careers in the creative industries. Through a guided tour and industry insights, many left feeling newly motivated to pursue futures in design, illustration, or digital media.
Beyond the galleries, the students captured Sydney’s industrial beauty during a photography session on Cockatoo Island, and explored movement, texture, and form by drawing wildlife at Taronga Zoo.
Our students should be praised for their “enthusiasm, maturity, and creative curiosity” throughout the trip, it was a fantastic opportunity to see how art lives beyond the classroom.
As the students return to Narrabri, they bring with them a renewed passion for artistic expression — and a sketchbook full of ideas.
