On 26th June, eight Year 8 students from NHS accompanied by teacher Miss Li attended the Orbispace Initiative's Future of Female Leadership Forum at the Sydney Startup Hub. This is the second year of NHS participation in this STEM program, and they were excited to have us back.
It was a very packed day. Students attended workshops on communication skills and building a resilient mindset. They participated in sessions on how to use industry technology and Canva's AI features, which was a highlight for the students.
The main focus of the day was the networking lunch, where students were able to speak with women working within the STEM field. We were so lucky to have Dr Cathy Foley, physicist and former Chief Scientist of Australia, give an address to the students at the start of lunch. Some of our students got to chat with Dr Foley, as well as other women working in the innovation, energy, finance, biotechnology industries.
One memorable piece of advice from the networking lunch: "You're going to fail at a lot of things, but you have to keep trying until you get there."
The students will return to the Startup Hub in September to compete in the pitch competition and are already looking forward to using all the skills they learnt from the Forum!
