Year 12 Ancient History Excursion

Year 12 Ancient History Canberra Excursion

On Tuesday March 25th, the Year 12 Ancient History class embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Canberra, diving deep into the wonders of the ancient world! Our primary destination was the National Museum of Australia, where the captivating Pompeii exhibition awaited us. This remarkable showcase, which ties into our core study in Ancient History, engaged us with the rich narrative of a civilisation buried beneath ash for nearly 2000 years.

As we walked through the exhibit, we were awe-struck by the incredible artefacts unearthed from the ruins of Pompeii, each piece whispering stories of life in a bygone era, while a simulation of Mount Vesuvius erupted in the background.

Our adventure didn’t stop there! Next, we explored the Classics Museum at the Australian National University, where we were privileged to be guided by the enthusiastic curator, Dr. Georgia Pike-Rowney. She led us through the museum’s impressive collection, sparking our imaginations as we interacted with artefacts such as ancient Roman coins and dice during a hands-on workshop. The thrill of holding items that have survived millennia was absolutely exhilarating!

On the second day, we continued our exploration of Canberra’s treasures, visiting the breathtaking Australian National Botanic Gardens, where nature’s beauty surrounded us. We then ventured into the interactive world of Questacon, engaging in fun, hands-on science exhibits that delighted both minds and senses. Our day concluded with a solemn and inspiring visit to the Australian War Memorial, where we reflected on the sacrifices made for our nation.

This excursion was more than just a trip; it was a journey through time that deepened our understanding of the ancient past and enriched our appreciation for history. The memories we created and the knowledge we gained will stay with us long after we return to the classroom. Canberra, you were incredible!
